I watched an interesting TED talk by Josh Kaufman called “20 hours to learn anything.” His talk is encouraging because I remember struggling with intense frustration with Muay Thai (MT) and no-gi bjj when I began training in 2010. In fact, I quit the no-gi bjj after a month and stuck with MT but I didn’t go to class consistently and wasn’t strength training or working on cardio properly between classes.

I’m going to apply this 20 hours (or 20 classes) method as I begin my new training journey.

It will help because I can push through the frustrations and learning curve as a newbie knowing I have the 20 hour goal.

It’ll help me stay accountable during this important beginner stage of taking on both MT & bjj because I’m more likely to commit to going to classes consistently.

I can do an in depth assessment on my progress after I hit 20 & plan ahead for necessary changes I may need to take going forward…and maybe reward myself when I hit 20 hours of each discipline!

With that said, I logged one hour of MT tonight. My first gi will arrive in the mail soon and I’m excited to get on the mat to log my first bjj hour!

Cheers to the journey to 20!

UPDATED TRACKING HOURS:

Muay Thai: 13

BJJ: 4

I’ve been taking cardio kickboxing since August, which are taught by the Muay Thai instructors. The classes are great because the instructors correct technique & call same combos they’d teach in MT but we mostly hit the heavy bag instead holding pads for each other (we hold/kick Thai pads sometimes). I’m not not sure if I should be counting those hours towards my journey to 20. I do feel it compliments Muay Thai training!
