Bye, 2017! My 2018 goals are on fire and I’m ready to go. First, here’s a look at what I accomplished in 2017 with the encouragement and support of my amazing friends and family.

2017 goals smashed:

  • Ran a half marathon.
  • Stuck to running for a year!
  • Lifted for physique.
  • Lost more postpartum weight which helped ease pain when running!
  • Taught yoga again.

A jump to celebrate the end of 2017

In with the new! Running for a year has made me mentally tougher. Having endurance helps tremendously in dance class & other workouts. Now that running has stuck, I’m ready to take things up a notch.

My 2018 goals:

  • Run a freaking marathon!
  • Restart martial arts!
  • Get involved in the fitness community (Sweat Pink).
  • Lift for strength & power.

Wait, martial arts?

I’ve taken countless Muay Thai and boxing classes since 2011 but I haven’t done it since moving back to GA. Boy, do I miss it. If I had to choose between any combat sport, I’d always choose striking!

On the other hand, I have a tough time sticking to BJJ. It’s an amazing sport and I think all women should learn it. Unfortunately, my BJJ journey reflects my running journey (multiple starts/stops).

Here’s my BJJ history:

  1. 2011 (GA): After getting comfortable with Muay Thai, I got talked into trying no gi BJJ. After a couple of months, I got discouraged when guys wouldn’t pair up or roll with me.
  2. 2016 (CT): During striking classes, I had major FOMO watching the gi classes so I started taking BJJ classes again. I attended class 1-2 times a week and REALLY enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I got injured. I fell down a flight of stairs and took several weeks to recover (I couldn’t even sleep on my side). During the recovery period, I got 2 piercings so BJJ wasn’t an option while I healed. We moved back to GA so I never returned.
  3. 2018: 3rd time is a charm! I’m trying out BJJ gyms this month. With plans to make myself stick to it for a year (like I did with running), I’ll surely get over the beginner’s hump.

My preference is to find a gym that has Muay Thai and BJJ but it’s not going to happen. I can’t find a mma gym that has Muay Thai classes at times that I can attend. Fortunately, there are quite a few BJJ gyms near me so that’ll give me NO EXCUSE to ditch grappling.

Cheers to an amazing 2018!
