Balance

I am a 200 hour RYT (registered yoga teacher). I love yoga and I truly believe if everyone practiced, the world would be a peaceful place. I’ve been practicing since 2001 and I’m still amazed at how deep and spiritual the practice can be should one choose to dive into a teacher training, or study the yoga sutras.

Lately, my practice does not always include physical asana. Instead, I sit by a window and meditate or silently repeat positive affirmations while nursing my little one. Sometimes, I only have time for a downward facing dog and a quick child’s pose before facing the day. Quiet moments alone are rare and cherished so I take advantage of practicing mindfulness throughout the day.

When I finally practice yoga, I try to focus on my weaknesses (heart openers and back bends). I was stuck in rut and practiced the same sequences but change is good for balance. I use this opportunity to release and practice to fun music I don’t typically listen to when the baby is awake!

Yoga teacher tips:

  • There are no rules! Just get on the mat, listen to what the body needs, and move.
  • Listen to your breath, let it guide you. Whether sitting for meditation or practicing yoga, focusing on your breath helps quiet the mind.
  • Speaking of breath, if you find yourself breathing faster and feel discomfort in a specific pose, modify the pose.
