What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than to run a half marathon! On Wednesday, I signed up for the 13.1 mile race.  I drag my husband and daughter to all of my races so on Sunday morning, I woke my husband up at 5:30am, excited and ready to go! He requested that I find another hobby. HA!

Mother’s Day Half Marathon

This race:  This event was a 5K, 10K, and half marathon organized by Deborah Montgomery Racing, which I never heard of. I searched for their page on Facebook and Instagram but only found a website and a couple of blog recaps. From what I read, I could tell it was a small, tight knit type of atmosphere. It was held in the beautiful Bay Creek park in Loganville, GA. There were about 50 or so participants and the volunteers mostly stayed at the pavilion, where all racers had to make their loops as Deborah marked off each racer’s loops to assure everyone completed their race distance. There wasn’t a big digital clock and there wasn’t a marked start/finish line.

OUTFIT: Fabletics top, Athleta skirt, Zensah sleeves, Headsweats visor

The Swag: Each participant received a medal, a generic tech shirt, and bib. They provided water and red Gatorade throughout the race and offered bananas, chips, and fig newton cookies.

How I did: Not well, considering I lost 3 weeks of training time (2 weeks in April, 1 week in May). I tried really hard to have negative splits but it ended up with positive splits. According to my Garmin, I ran 13.33 miles in 2:37:13 (I stopped my watch when I reached the pavilion) but the site has my result as 2:34:45 (13th place). As I stated, there wasn’t a marked start/finish line so I’m not sure what happened. At least I beat my 2012 half marathon time.

My time vs my result

I’m in an interesting place in my running journey. I’m not fiercely training for specific races. My goal this year was to be “trained enough” to jump into any race distance and finish. That means I probably won’t PR anytime this year but I’m OK with that.

Which time would you go with? What did you do this weekend?

  1. Congrats on completing another half marathon!

It’s always hard when the time on your watch doesn’t match the official results. I always tend to go with the lower time, LOL

  2. I’m in the same place. I’m not going for any time goals this year. I had a hard year of racing in 2017 so I’m good with just running for fun!

  3. I’m sorry you had a tough race. I would go with the published time, because that’s what published, but weird how it was so different from your time without a marked start or finish.

I find small races like that really intimidating. I feel much more comfortable with a few more people around me. This weekend I ran a 10K that had about 200 people registered (in the 10K (and maybe another 200-300 in the 5K), and that’s about as small as I’d like to go. Sounds like a great way to spend Mother’s Day!

  4. You definitely should go by the official results! It sounds like you are in great shape, if you just signed up for this Half. I am not comfortable with the Half distance but feel OK about 10 milers.

  5. Sometimes, finishing is winning! I’ve jumped into halfs at the last minute–sometimes it goes well, sometimes not so much! But hey, it’s 13.1 miles.

  6. still it’s not a bad time for not having trained the last several weeks!

I *always* go with official times. even if my garmin says more or less.

Luckily my husband runs too so we tell each other we need a new hobby (then we went out and cycled our butts off and decided running is AOK!! haha)

  7. Of course you ran a half marathon on Mother’s Day. No sleeping in and breakfast in bed for you! Lol. Way to finish, even though it was tough.
