Let’s talk meal prep. Many health/fitness professionals and competitors use meal prep as an effective tool for healthy eating. I totally understand how this can be overwhelming for some people. It does require some time of your schedule but our health and well-being is worth the time and effort. Luckily, there are shortcuts we can take to make it easier and less time consuming.
HOW DO YOU MEAL PREP?
- SHOP: Plan ahead and write down a few fruits, veggies, oatmeal, and lean protein sources, include any other items you will need. If you’re new to meal prep, buy containers to portion out your food. I grocery shop 1-2 times a week. I buy a large amount of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, egg whites and plant protein (tofu, tempeh, beans) and stock up on oatmeal, protein powders, and seasonings.
- If you’re short on time, buy fruit and vegetables that are already chopped and/or buy frozen produce.
- CLEAN, CHOP, AND COOK: I clean all the fruits and veggies and chop them up if I need to portion them. I usually roast huge servings of vegetables, a block of tofu, and make egg white muffins in one sitting.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU MEAL PREP?
It is common to meal prep once or twice a week. For example, every Sunday and Wednesday. Find a schedule that works for you and your family. Personally, I meal prep 2-3 times a week because I don’t like to eat food older than 2-3 days old. Try it for a couple of weeks to get the hang of it! It’s a game changer if you need to fit it more fruits and vegetables!
