6K? Who runs a 6K?

Waiting to start

I thought it was an interesting distance and they offered medal to the finishers so I signed up! This race was held at the same park of my last 5K so I was familiar with the course. As we pulled into the parking lot, a few older gentlemen passed my car and I told my husband, “Those guys are going to kick my a**!” He didn’t believe me until he saw one finish a couple of minutes before I reached the finish line.

Sprint to finish

My goal was to finish in 37 minutes but I finished in 35:03 (gun time); 34:27 chip time! I asked my husband if we could wait until the awards ceremony just in case I placed in my age group. We knew it was a competitive field because money was on the line but he agreed and gently reminded me of this, just in case I didn’t place. As they got to my age group, my name was announced for second place! Both of our jaws dropped and I ran to the announcer to accept my hard earned award!

Second place award

Later that afternoon, I logged on their site to view results and photos. According to the online results, I got third place so I’m not sure what happened. Second or third place, I’m happy with my time! I just hope everyone received their proper awards at the end of the day.

Happy and surprised

How it felt to run a 6K: It sucked the energy out of me! This is the first time that I felt like I actually “raced” and didn’t just run to finish a race! I was shocked at the fast pace times on my Garmin but after the first mile, I quit looking because I was ALREADY TIRED! I made some pacing mistakes but glad I finished stronger than I expected.

It took a few days for me to feel completely recovered. Now I understand! I get it! And I love it!
