Last night, I ran the Mayor’s Challenge 5K race downtown in Alpharetta, GA at the City Hall. First of all, I have never raced on a Thursday! Second, I didn’t expect it to be as big of race that it ended up being. It was sold out! Parking was tricky (non existent) at City Hall but there was plenty of free parking 1-2 minutes away from the starting line at the churches. Since it was a corporate challenge, there were a ton of sponsors offering pamphlets and goodies. My husband’s favorite stop was the Audi expo (of course). The kid’s race started 30 minutes prior to the 5K.
COURSE: Mile 1 was easy breezy. No hills and lots of runners going fast! I ran mile 1 in 10:17 (my fastest mile while pregnant). Mile 2 was the opposite, hills on hills. When I turned the corner and saw a familiar hellacious, never ending hill that I’ve ran in the past, I saw a sea of runners turn into walkers. I don’t blame them, I took 2 walk breaks during the climb! Some brave souls decided to keep running up the steep incline but a couple of them changed their mind when I walked right past them. Mile 3 was so much better. I took a final mini walk break in the beginning of mile 3 because I wanted to finish strong. When I knew the end was near, I took off! It was fun running downhill to the finish line!
MY FINISH TIME: Official results: 34:00. My goal was a sub 35 minute 5K and I got it! Much different than my last 5K result (28 minutes) but I’ll take it.
SWAG: All participants received a goodie bag with a fan (?), hot/cold pack, tape measurer, multiple bottle openers (that I can’t use until 2019) and finishers tee shirt.
Overall, I enjoyed the race and would do it again!
